Zhuguan (主观) is a character in the Aozora's Adventure series.
Background[edit | edit source]
Zhuguan was raised in a small family consisting of himself, his parents, and his brother Huolongxue. Since his youth, his family would routinely take him to go see fireworks shows, sparking an interest in the young and curious boy. Overhearing this growing love for fireworks, Zhuguan’s grandfather would show him secret pyro techniques when he visited—only planning to show him more when he turned older, to see if his love and admiration for fireworks would set him down the path of wanting to become a pyrotechnician in adulthood. On his next two birthdays, he was gifted sparklers to light and his parents would launch smaller firework launchers in their backyard. However, one morning, Huolongxue would cause their house to go up in flames through unknown causes, forcing Zhuguan to round up and follow his parents out of the house before everything was lost to the flames. They would make it out safely and settled in at Zhuguan’s grandparents’ home, but Zhuguan’s father would pin the blame on him having tried to light a firework inside the house—oblivious to the true cause of the house fire.
Filled with guilt, Zhuguan was forbidden from attending any firework shows or coming within distance of anything considered highly flammable. Huolongxue would take advantage of his brother’s guilt to tease him and stroke his own ego. The brothers began to drift further and further apart through their teenage years, barely being able to tolerate one another as they got older and Zhuguan’s sense of justice and drive to help others clashed with his brother’s cocky and edgy personality. One day, at the age of 18, Zhuguan was awoken by a familiar sound. With a smile on his face, he ran to the window to see fireworks from the distance. Remembering his love for the art of pyrotechs, he followed the old broken stone road to a ragtag group camping out. Since he was considered dishonorable by those who know him, Zhuguan was hesitant to introduce himself fearing word had spread about him. Overcoming his anxiety, he introduced himself to the nearest person he could find: a man in a top hat. The man was tall and mysterious, looked in Zhuguan’s direction, and recognized the passion in his eyes. The man in the hat declared loudly before Zhuguan could get a word out, “Ye who walks towards I?” “I recognize the fire within you, and we’re looking for new recruits to join our travelin’ circus of wonder! Would you like to join us for an adventure?” Zhuguan pondered, thinking about how he’s living life and the shame and guilt brought upon him by his family. Seeing no other way out of this unfair life he’s been living, he decided he wanted to do “something with his life” and said “Let’s go, sir!”
After getting permission from his family, Zhuguan would travel with the circus for ten years. During his time away, he gained incredulous strength from all the physical labor working at the circus and was taught how to build and operate fireworks, receiving a license in the process. Part of his motivation for returning home was the rumors spreading of a man nicknamed the “Spitfire Dragon” causing trouble around China. As soon as he arrives, he smells smoke and follows it to a muscular primal-looking man playing with some flames in his hands. The man would turn and start walking out of the smoke to Zhuguan, allowing him to immediately be recognized. “Huolongxue…? What happened to you?” The smoke cleared around Huolongxue as his new figure exposed itself. “Oh, so many things, old friend. But you’re looking at the new… and improved… Huolongxue~!” The two muscular brothers would fire questions at each other until Huolongxue said “Oh… By the way, I know a secret… an absolute BLAST of a secret… Turns out, old brother, you were none the wiser to what actually happened that night: It was actually I, Huolongxue, that torched that old garden shed we lived in, It wasn’t worthy enough for someone of MY greatness!” Huolongxue’s showboating propelled Zhuguan into launching a screaming punch at him, only for Huolongxue to use his fire powers to repel the attack. A feeling inside Zhuguan that he had not felt in years began to return to him, but no matter what he tried to fight back with, his brother would easily knock him out and leave him unconscious in the middle of the road.
When Zhuguan woke up, he was at his grandparents’ home being nursed by his parents. They would apologize for mis-blaming him many years ago, realizing that Huolongxue was behind the destruction of their old home all along. They had a great banquet to lighten the mood and celebrate the reunification of Zhuguan returning to the family and no longer being disowned. Unfortunately, Zhuguan was unable to fully enjoy himself, due to wandering thoughts of his brother and the need to bring him home and bring the light back into his heart. To prepare himself for possible combat, Zhuguan would begin constructing a large firework launcher using repurposed parts from some prior shows he brought back with him from his years working at the circus. Inspired by his years of being called "The Dragon", for his strengths and expertise in pyrotechnics, he would build the firework launcher to resemble an eastern dragon.
