Vergêst (ベルゲスト, Berugesuto) is a character in the Aozora's Adventure series.
Background[edit | edit source]
Vergêst was raised in the fertile region of Trøndelag outside the city of Trondheim on a small farm. His centaur parents sent him to work alongside a farmer that they were good friends with, in hopes that he would grow strong and learn from the experiences of manual labor. His parents would return time and time again to check on his progress, watching him grow under the farmer’s care, and outside of the farming season Vergêst would return home to spend time with his parents. His black horse body and grey tail made him stand out from the other centaurs that they would commute with, leading to many complements being put on the juvenile Vergêst and how he was born with such an extravagant color combo.
One day, Vergêst and the farmer would visit the community center where they regularly hosted and participated in farmer’s markets, only for a rouge bike gang to arrive and declare the center as their territory. They demanded payment to “protect the establishment from disgruntled people”, hinting clearly they would destroy the building if they didn’t pay the extortion fee. The farmers and centaurs would aggress upon the bikers immediately, the former taking out weapons and the latter using their powerful melee attacks. As more bikers poured in, the brawl would become too much for everyone to handle, forcing everyone to flee despite Vergêst landing two surprise kicks against the gang’s leader and one of his closest cohorts. The centaurs ferried off groups of farmers to safety as the bikers set the building on fire, burning alive anyone left inside. One of these was the farmer Vergêst worked for, whom Vergêst watched limp out of the burning community center before falling face first on the grass. With no further option, Vergêst fled the scene and hid in the mountains until morning.
Vergêst would return and remain with his family through his teenage years and they would relocate to the capital of Norway, Oslo, which is known for its police presence and safety. A strong desire for revenge was growing within Vergêst’s heart and he looked for opportunities to increase his physical power to make him a stronger brawler. In the new high school he began attending, he would meet another centaur named Kyros, who wore sunglasses, had a black horse body, had long straight blonde hair and a matching horse tail, and dressed in sleek black leather clothing on his human half. He was ignored by all of the students around him, but Vergêst, finding his appearance fascinating, approached. He would begin with a simple “Hey, how are things?”. Kyros responded “Good, not much.” A day later, the two would find themselves in the same spot, introducing one another and getting into lengthy discussions. They would meet in the same spot outside the school time and time again, with Kyros eventually saying to Vergêst that he was feeling excluded from the community due to his appearance and one of his secret desires that he wished not to reveal in public. One day, the two centaurs would gallop into an open field all alone where Kyros would reveal to Vergêst his secret.
“I want to form my own biker gang… they look so cool and can do so many things together! But I don’t have the strength in me to lead one and centaurs can’t drive motorcycles…” This brought dreadful memories flooding back to Vergêst, as if he was relieving it in the moment. “Are you sure this is what you want? The only gang I ran into in my past was total scum and they killed my best friend and burned down an entire building!” Kyros added “No! I don’t want to be that kind of gang! I want to be something different… a force of peace in this cruel place!” Vergêst stepped back and thought it over, coming to an idea. “I’ll help you. That’s what friends do.” Vergêst says as he puts his arm on Kyros’ shoulder, feeling his honorable demeanor shining through. The two centaurs put their plan into motion as they grew closer to one another, graduating from high school and entering adulthood, allowing them to train at the gym and work jobs together to bulk up their physique and make money to deck themselves out in ruggish studded leather outfits mixed with the appearance of a nordic highlander. The outfits would cover their human half, their horse half, and their horse legs. To complete the biker motif, they would visit a motorcycle parts shop in the area and purchase discarded classic motorcycle handlebars to attach to the belts on their waistlines, gripping it while running to let them put all their focus on sprinting at fast speeds.
Now free from the restraints of their parents in Oslo, Vergêst and Kyros would leave home and “ride” through the surrounding regions of Norway, searching for new, eager members to join their gang. Together, the two would soon found their preferred weapons and combat styles: Vergêst would obtain a large glaive from an ancient shipwreck he raided with Kyros, while Kyros would “acquire” a pair of new Tommy machine guns from the spoils of a gang battle. Years later, the gang would grow three faithfuls, Bjorn, Fredløs, and Gragas, along with several additional members rotating out over time. The recruits include similar victims of gang violence desiring revenge, those seeking more thrill and excitement in their lives, and those wanting to take a stand against a criminal underground. The Roadway Watch would become the gang’s official title, with every member strapping makeshift handlebars on their chests as their insignia and following their drive to fight back against the hostility of gangs that seek to dismantle society. Vergêst and Kyros, now with impressive facial hair on their chins, would refer to themselves as the collective “Champions of Norway”, standing by each others’ side and commanding their gang together with their muscular arms folded dominantly, stampeding through the urban and country roads of Norway.
Powers and Abilities[edit | edit source]
Vergêst is a centaur combining many attributes of a large muscular brawler and a draft horse. He has a high degree of skill when it comes to hand-to-hand combat and high speed, both when it comes to movement or while fighting with his signature glaive. He is a modern-day variation of a centaur, giving his horse half slightly more strength, flexibility and dexterity compared to a common horse. Some of his feats include halving the time for running a 100m dash and having high endurance and balance, able to go for extremely long distances and prolong the amount of time he can stay focused in combat.
