Thalassa (タラッサ, Tarassa) is a character in the Aozora's Adventure series.

Background[edit | edit source]

Thalassa is a primeval spirit of the seas that had lived since ancient times, representing the ocean and being one of the oldest sea creatures known in the present, rumored to have been the one to create the world’s first aquatic life. Through the years, the spirit began to manifest into the form of an adult female, sporting lush, blue hair with a surface that resembled water and a fish tail colored a deep, rich blue decorated with scales that appeared to glow when sunlight was cast on them. The spirit remained immortal, slowly completing its development into the creature known as a “mermaid”- one of the first of its kind along with several other prototype merfolk that stuck to the rules of urban legends, describing them as rare beings of nature known for their songs and despising land-dwellers for polluting waters and hunting aquatic creatures, with a select few being love-obsessed females destined to find themselves a loving husband and manipulate them into marriage.

Years passed, and while Thalassa remained the same, the mermen and mermaids through the ages began to develop bonds with humans and adapt and evolve to their culture, gaining new abilities and properties through time. Such abilities included the ability to breathe more reliably and survive on land without having to re-enter water, and “swimming” several inches above ground level. Their outfits and dress codes evolved as well, mixing the traditional merfolk appearance with that of human clothing and hairstyles. In return, humans in various seaside cities and towns changed their economy to be more welcoming to the aquatic lifeforms, including theaters and concert halls for the mermaids to showcase their singing. Thalassa repulsed these developments, hiding in the waters until she snapped one day and in rage, attacked a surfer at a nearby beach by creating a giant wave that was too powerful for the surfer to handle.

The surfer survived the attack and swam up to the surface of the water, not noticing the displeased sea spirit staring him down. Grabbing his board, he paddled back to the beach while Thalassa followed him with a pout, unable to continue on as she could not remain exposed to the surface for too long. As the man backed up from the shoreline with a suspicious look, Thalassa’s motivation for answers caused her to reveal a power she never imagined having- water manipulation. As she paddled closer to the edge of the shore, a large bubble of fresh blue water enveloped her as she rose out of the ocean, allowing her to maneuver on land without evolving. The other humans and merfolk on the beach put their focus on the giant ball of water sliding onto the beach. “You and your kind are a disturbance to ours.” Thalassa poked her head out of the bubble to speak to the surfer in a monotone voice with a small echo. The other merfolk on the beach approached in confusion, some joined by their human friends and companions.

They questioned the sea spirit’s dubious beliefs, as the two species co-existed and benefited each other for well over 600 years. Not one of them paid attention and returned to their activities, while the surfer- one who had met and befriended several others of Thalassa’s race from his life being so close to the sea, tried to calm and explain to her the benefits of both species being and working together, using the ones currently at the beach as an example. Thalassa lowered her guard and continued listening, but she still didn’t fully believe his story. To prove to the spirit that his kind meant no harm, the surfer offered Thalassa a tour of his hometown. She didn’t utter a word but popped her head back into her bubble and rolled around the town behind the surfer out of curiosity. The surfer led her around his hometown for about an hour before they met back at the beach. He told Thalassa “Feel free to keep exploring, I have to head home.” Thalassa stayed put, while the man left, and Thalassa kept rolling around town in her water bubble, dumbfound by the sights in front of her.

Through repeated monthly visits with the surfer, Thalassa slowly got used to her surroundings and trusted the surfer’s words that humans weren’t as harmful as she thought, but still remains somewhat skeptical of them. As a gift, the surfer bought her some clothing to help her better fit in with the other merfolk that adapted to human culture and proceeded to teach her how to surf- having the side effect of self-teaching Thalassa some new maneuvers with her personal water orb.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Thalassa is a moody, arrogant, and stubborn mermaid with a stained outlook towards humans thanks to being from an era before the two species united. Even after seeing the truth, she is un-social and remains uneasy twoards fully land-based creatures unless she’s known them for a period of time, in which she’ll lower her guard and converse with them without issue.

Powers and Abilities[edit | edit source]

As a mermaid, Thalassa has naturally fast movement, strength, and reflexes when in water, and can breathe while fully submerged. She is bestowed with advanced hydrokinesis and uses it to form a mobile orb full of fresh, clean water to traverse on land. The water orb is weighed down by gravity, can be dispelled and reformed at any time, and with some buildup and fast-swimming through the sphere- can be used as a cannon to launch her in any direction. Thalassa has enough power to only form one sphere; if she forms a second one, the first immediately breaks apart on the spot.

Because the water distorts Thalassa’s speech when speaking to someone on land, she must poke her head out of the sphere to communicate before ducking back inside. When her face is above water, she forms two makeshift tears from the edges of her eyes to liquidly them and improve her vision to work as it does in water. The water sphere can function as a personal seat and be ridden around like a vehicle with a bouncy surface, but eventually Thalassa will be forced to re-enter the sphere as she is not able to intake oxygen as well as other merfolk. Underwater, her speech is heard crystal clear to those also in the water, regardless of species.

Apart from her mobile sphere, Thalassa can fire blasts of water from the orb while inside, launch geysers up from the ground, summon aquatic vortexes and waterfalls to control her surroundings and shield herself, and drench her surroundings with a wave of water. A geyser directly from the orb can be used as a direct and fast method of travel, de-morphing the sphere while Thalassa travels through the geyser and reforming the sphere when the geyser starts to die down.
